How ELD Changes will Impact Distribution
Wednesday, October 18, 2017

Wanting to know how ELDs change distribution? Let’s first talk about what an ELD is exactly.  ELD is the short term for an electronic logging mandate. It can mean a lot of things for the distribution industry.

ELDs allow for operations to become more efficient which can lead to great benefits. See some of the benefits and abilities of ELDs below to see if it will be right for you:

-        ELDs can improve productivity; by tracking logging and keep accountability, you are able to ensure that productivity is where it should be. By making sure deadlines are met and shipments are being logged to check for efficiency, the productivity can be increased by finding ways to improve through the logs.

-        ELDs can also save your organization money and unnecessary expense.  By using an ELD, you can ensure that the driver/vehicle is holding up to safer travels. For instance, drivers who stick with optimum speeds on the roadway lead to safer travels and less accidents. This can also lead to cheaper insurance.

So what kinds of ELDs are out there?

Truthfully? Probably too many. With technology advancements always happening, new and improved ELDs are always coming out. There are many to choose from. If you’re looking into ELDs, be sure to look at several options to find which one works right for you.

A little nervous of who’s watching?

Don’t be. The only people who can see the ELD data are those who are authorized by the trucking company to review it. This would most likely be owners, managers and those in charge of keeping accountability logs and look for trends in the logs for efficiencies.

Another benefit to an ELD is the fact that it electronically logs important information about the route. By logging electronically, this limits the amount of time that goes into paperwork. While some still may be required, this limits those tedious paper logs.

In short, ELDs will improve distribution for the transportation industry. Contact us at Gateway Distribution to find out how we can make your deliveries more efficient and cost effective.
